Name: Chris Wood
Occupation: Web Content Editor

How long have you worked at the Warrington Guardian?
4 years

Did you work at any other regional newspapers before the Warrington Guardian?
I have always worked in the Newsquest newspaper group. I started working at the Crewe Guardian in 1993 just as a sports reporter then I moved to the Warrington Guardian as news editor in April 1998.

Before being a Web Content Editor did you start off as a reporter?

Yes I started in the newspaper industry as a reporter.

What qualifications do you need to become a reporter?
Technically you don't need any qualifications to become a reporter as there is on the job training in the NCTJ. Although you need to have a good attitude and be able to write.
I did a 1 year course at the University of Central Lancashire which was called a pre-entry which basically gives you a grounding in all aspects of journalism like, how to write stories, public affairs and short hand. I passed that. You can do an NTCJ entry course and after 1 1/2 years on the job you take a proficiency test, which makes you into a senior journalist. A level in English does help but it is not entirely necessary. You can also do a degree in journalism.

What qualifications do you need to become a Web Content Editor?
None. I have been here for 2 years and I was looking at the web site and how to expand it and I have an interest in design so I applied for the position of Web Content Editor. I work on my own so I sort out contents for the web site.

Why did you decide to work in the newspaper industry?

It wasn't a decision I have had since I was at school. I was 22 and I wasn't doing much else so it was more of a suggestion by somebody that I could write.

What aspects of your job do you enjoy the most?

Working in newspapers, I have always enjoyed meeting people and the human-interest side. I enjoyed going out and meeting people.
With the Internet the best part is the freedom, I am the only member of the editorial team.

What are the downsides of your job?

Reporting wise the hours aren't great. Usually id get into work at 8.30 and id work until 6.30-7pm but only get paid from 9-5.30pm because there was no over time pay. The pay in general isn't great but you do it because you enjoy it. Another downside is having to interview a bereaved family or friends because that can be really difficult.

What is your advice to anyone wanting a career in the newspaper industry?

If its what you want to do just go for it. I think its one of the best jobs you can do if your interests are in writing, people and getting out and about, breaking stories and all that sort of stuff. Don't worry about not having the right qualifications. If you do work experience or work in a newspapers office and someone realises your potential the chances are you will get on. University educated employees and those who just come out of college have the same chance in reporting. If you want to get qualifications then I would advise you to go to University.
