Although
the 'Big Apple' is renowned for its towering skyscrapers the city itself
did not appear intimidating. The warmth I received from the people was
something completely unexpected and took the edge off the atmosphere
that rose from the hustling streets.
The streets of New York display a different nature of the people. If
you are going to venture onto the sidewalk be prepared to expect a shove
or two, but it is here that you can experience the movies with steam
oozing from beneath the concrete, people walking at quick pace, eyes
studying the ground. This view was unexpected, but still appreciated
by experiencing it first hand.
The subway seemed a good way of commuting from one part of the city
to another. It is, but again this is very busy and it takes some pushing
to gain a place especially in rush hour. If this all becomes too much
then escape into one of the many coffee bars that align the streets,
welcoming you to grab a steaming cup of double espresso or a creamy
hot chocolate.

The
city of Manhattan is awash with skyscrapers |
New
York is such a vast city it will take days to see everything, but if
you plan a short stay then I would suggest you make two destinations
a priority.
Greenwich Village is home to many bars and restaurants and is extremely
popular with the New Yorkers. This part of New York's culture is remembered
for its bohemian lifestyle that began in the early 1900's when many
artists, writers and jazz musicians took centre stage at famous night-clubs,
such as the Blue Note and Village Vanguard. This village has seen the
likes of Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones.
This is a place that is still alive with a vibrant atmosphere and a
place that holds many cultural sites, cafes, shops and small record
shops dotted all around the village selling obscure music.
Washington Square Park is like a festival on a summer's day, its packed
and buzzing with the chatter of many. The essence of this village is
still captivated by the 60's lifestyle. Once you enter you will experience
a laid-back approach to life and you will see the hippie culture come
alive.
